'' This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge required to work in the building and construction industry. You will learn a broad range of skills to help you decide which area of building and construction you wish to follow. You will learn skills in bricklaying/block laying, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

Get your practical skills up to give you the best chance of getting an apprenticeship in painting and decorating. This qualification covers units in reading plans, take measurements, prepare surfaces, different paint techniques, how to use scaffolding, workplace safety, how to organise your work and much more.

Painting and Decorating is known as the finishing trade of the building industry.

It encompasses areas such as:

Architectural - Internal and external
painting and decorating on a variety of surfaces, and includes the decoration of new and existing homes, renovation and restoration.

Commercial - Internal and external
painting and decorating on a variety of surfaces, including such buildings as hospitals, shops, hotels and buildings of historical significance.

Swan TAFE is the only metropolitan TAFEWA college that offers training in painting and decorating. The purpose built workshop at Thornlie campus is first rate and fully equipped. Students work in simulated rooms built specifically for hands-on practice, and have been involved in decorating various locations on-campus, such as the cafeteria, as part of their projects.
