Training Course:

Solid Plastering Workshop (Certificate)

School/Trainer:

Swan TAFE
Perth, WA, Australia

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge required to work in the building and construction industry. You will learn a broad range of skills to help you decide which area of building and construction you wish to follow. You will learn skills in bricklaying/block laying, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

Give yourself your best chance of getting an apprenticeship in solid plastering. This qualification will see you learning how to read plans, take measurements, prepare surfaces, concrete different surfaces, apply plaster and render, how to use scaffolding and how to organise your work.

If you enjoy working with your hands and find yourself admiring the skill that’s gone in to creating the decorative finishes on walls and ceilings, you may wish to consider the job of a plasterer. Although this occupation is dominated by men, if you’re female and have an interest in this type of work, why not give it a go?

Plasterers specialise in solid or fibrous plastering, though in some cases they may do both.

During the solid plastering process, decorative and protective coverings of plaster (or similar materials) are applied to the interior and exterior of buildings. Plasterers first clean any surfaces they are due to work on, and even out any corners, wall and ceiling surfaces using screeds. These are strips of plaster that are applied horizontally or vertically on uneven walls or ceilings to straighten them. Next, the surface is sprayed with special fibrous material to help make the plaster coating longer lasting.

Solid plasterers then prepare and apply the plaster. After several coats are applied, the surface is levelled out using a darby, which helps achieve an even thickness, and then smoothed with a trowel. Solid plasterers may also fix precast cornices (decorative finishes), like the ornate ones you may have spotted in older homes, or other plaster fittings. They can also render exterior brick walls to enrich a building’s appearance.

Balga Campus is a major centre in WA for training in the building and construction industries. Our workshops are purpose built. Training with advanced equipment will give you up-to-date skills and knowledge. Our lecturers are experienced and maintain close links to building and construction organisations so that training is industry relevant and opportunities for student involvement in real-life projects are available.
