'' This qualification will provide you with practical skills and knowledge used in the automotive mechanical trades, light and heavy vehicle. You will learn a broad range of skills to help you decide which area of automotive you wish to follow. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.
By the time you’ve finished this qualification, you’ll know your radiator from your regulator and be in a good position to get yourself an apprenticeship in mechanics. Units covered include servicing engine systems, using and maintaining testing and measuring devices, using and maintaining tools and equipment, workplace safety and much more.
Automotive apprentices and pre-apprentices at Swan TAFE Midland Campus enjoy access to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment to train on, including vehicles, specialised automotive repair and diagnostic equipment, and specialised workrooms and workshops. You will need to be employed and registered as an apprentice before you can commence apprenticeship training.
Pre-Apprentice Studies - Light Mechanical aims to give you a sound background in the skills and safe working practices required by the automotive trades.
Obtaining a sound background in the vehicle mechanical trade enables you to make an informed decision on which pathway in the automotive industry is for you, and improves your chances of employment in the industry.
Completion of this qualification will improve your chances of becoming indentured to an employer and to do the training necessary to become a qualified tradesperson.
The work completed for this Certificate is accepted as a large part of the off-the-job training and graduates can complete the Certificate III qualification, required for an apprenticeship, in two years instead of three.
Pre-apprentice studies generally lead to apprenticeships in areas related to the competencies studied, or into related automotive areas including marine, small engines, motorcycles, road transport, heavy duty, plant and agricultural, autobody repairs and autobody refinishing.
An indenture is required with an employer to continue apprenticeship studies. Completing this pre-apprenticeship qualification improves your chances of gaining an apprenticeship
Employers in the first instance look to recruit new talent from successful pre-apprentices, as they will have already demonstrated a willingness to work in the industry, and have shown evidence of a high aptitude in this study area. ...''
