'' This qualification will provide you with practical skills and knowledge used in the automotive mechanical trades, light and heavy vehicle. You will learn a broad range of skills to help you decide which area of automotive you wish to follow. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

Since you had Tonka trucks in the sandpit, you’ve wanted to be a truck mechanic? This qualification will teach you about servicing engines, using and maintaining tools and equipment, using and maintaining testing and measuring devices, servicing and changing batteries, workplace safety and general workshop activities.

Swan TAFE are the only metro TAFEWA college that offers training in heavy road transport. Heavy road transport mechanics work with buses, trucks and other licensed heavy road transport. Our purpose built workshops, dyno rooms and equipment together with our industry specialist lecturers ensure quality and up to date training in the latest skills and techniques.

Successful completion of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to gain a pre-apprenticeship or an apprenticeship to become an automotive mechanic, or a tradesperson in another automotive related trade. You will need to be employed and registered as an apprentice before you can commence apprenticeship training.

This qualification aims to give participants entry level knowledge and skills to assist with gaining an apprenticeship as a mechanic working with on-road vehicles such as heavy duty trucks and buses.

The skills covered in this qualification include:
Maintenance and Servicing procedures for a range of heavy road vehicle automotive equipment and which may include: Engines, Cooling Systems, Clutches, Transmissions, Brakes, Electrical and Suspensions, Workplace Safety, Tools and associated equipment, Hydraulic Systems, Occupational Health and Safety and Workplace Communication.

Graduates are keenly sought by supporting employers. The past two years have necessitated delivering two qualifications to keep up with demand from employers.

Employers in the first instance look to recruit new talent from successful pre-apprentices, as they will have already demonstrated a willingness to work in the industry, and have shown evidence of a high aptitude in this study area.

Completing the Pre-apprenticeship Certificate gives you the opportunity to be selected by one of the many organisations involved in these industries. An on-the-job component of the qualification called Work Experience within the industry may also enhance employment prospects.
