This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to design and produce art in a range of areas including painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and printmaking. You will develop studio skills through direct investigation and experimentation of techniques and materials, research and observation, experimentation and evaluation. You will learn about art history and theory which will allow you to develop skills in critical exploration and speculative thinking about current and historical issues in the visual arts.
Art study at Great Southern TAFE trains students to engage with contemporary themes and, through research and discussion, to create visual responses to these themes. The aim of art study is to help you to develop an art practice that pushes the boundaries of what you know about, and expect of, art and of yourself. By pushing these boundaries you can increase the ways in which you can say what you want to say with your art.
Pushing boundaries means that you may experience situations that are new to you, that require you to work with unfamiliar materials, or that challenge the ideas you have. By undertaking these challenges, your art practice will be an exciting and evolving experience.
Three things are fundamental to your development as an art student and artist:
1. Some understanding of art history and theory. 2. Experimentation with materials, processes, equipment/tools and ideas. 3. An acquisition of a variety of skills.
Remember, that as an artist, you will continually learn new skills as your interests evolve. Our aim is to help you to develop practical skills as well as the ability to generate ideas that form the basis of a continuing art practice. ...''
