'' This course aims to provide students taking this module with the strategies, skills and knowledge to confidently work through all sections of Computer Maintenance & Repair using the following units.
Computer Basics: Intro, electronics, number systems, motherboard, form factors, chipsets, cache memory, BIOS, setup, updating; booting the system, boot process and review.
Bus Structures and microprocessors, interrupt requests, input/output addresses, microprocessors, cooling and powering; socket, slots, types and review.
Memory & Data Storage: basics, installing, memory considerations, storing/moving data, disc drives, SCSI and installing, RAID; disc storage, installing floppy drives, hard and optical drives; review
Powering & Disassembling the PC: powering the PC, power problems, supply, cooling the PC, converting power, connecting the power, using a multimeter; preparing and disassembling a PC, removing components, removing the final pieces, reassembling the PC, testing the PC and review.
Input & Output: Serial Ports, connections, parallel ports, specialised connections; keyboards, mouse, input devices, the monitor, video display; interfacing with the videio system; monitor power and safety; PC sound; review.
Printers and Portable systems: connecting, identifying; laser printers; upkeep; working with printers; powering portable systems and upkeep; system features and review.
Keeping the PC running: Preventative maintenance: Keyboard and mouse maintenance; monitor, case and drive maintenance; Virus protection and detection; Data backup; troubleshooting for BIOS, CPU, Disc drives, memory and other devices; review.
