Course Description:

'' This course is intended to introduce students to contemporary developments, concepts and practices that have shaped public policy development, implementation and accountability practices in the last two decades. It will examine the rise of the ?new public management? and ?managerialist? approaches, as well as explore the more recent and emerging emphases on ?new governance? - with its ?new institutionalist? focus on community capacity building, participatory governance and collaborative arrangements between government and non-government networks. The course will identify the practical implications of concepts such as ?productive diversity?, ?inclusiveness? and ?responsiveness? for developing public policies and governance practices that meet the needs of a culturally and linguistically diverse client base. The importance of integrating these considerations as a central management issue, rather than an afterthought, will be highlighted as a means for ensuring greater efficiency and impact of services in Australia?s multicultural society. It will also examine the tensions within local-global dimensions of public policy and governance using current issues like, migration and asylum seekers policies and global environmental policies. Tutorials will focus on specific case study examples directly relevant to students in Criminal Justice who intend to enter the justice, human service and multicultural industries, and students in International Studies, who intend to work in the areas of aid and development, diplomacy and international education.
