'' General Aims: This subject examines the basic characteristics and processes of organisations, with emphasis on those in the corrective services field. In addition, the unit examines current issues and trends in corrections including: decarceration, diversionary measures; community based programs, home detention, electronic monitoring and the privatisation" of corrections. Topic Areas: The idea of punishment; justification for punishment; the birth of the prison as an alternative to corporal punishment; prison reforms; the impact of imprisonment; the prison community; total institution; prisonisation; alternatives to imprisonment; privatisation of prisons; issues in Juvenile Corrections.
