'' The course provides a history of victimology and victim movements. It discusses the place of victims in contemporary society with a particular reference to victims of crime and their treatment at the hands of criminal justice system. It reviews definitions of victimisation and provides theoretical explanations of the victim experience with critique considering the varied socio-economic and personal background and experiences of victims, and consequences of victimisation. The course reviews and summarises victim centred research, and research on patterns of victimisation, and debates issues related to victim needs versus rights with respect to contemporary demands on criminal justice to be services providers. It considers the origin of restorative justice, its founding definitions and principles; its claims to efficacy and relevance and its importance in a field of governance.
