'' The course provides an overview of the core aspects of economic development theory and practice. It outlines the economic and political contexts in which practitioners operate and provides a review of the best and most recent thinking in economic development. It unpacks explanations of regional growth and decline and sets out the elements of good practice in economic development.

The course provides (in outline) a balanced mix of the knowledge an economic developer needs to operate effectively and the skills required to be successful. The course outlines the opportunities for, and the constraints on, effective action, the various contexts of economic development, and the strategies and options available to practitioners.

This course is part of an Economic Development post graduate program [leading to a Post Graduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters in Economic Development] developed by RMIT in conjunction with Economic Development Australia [EDA] with initial course development funding provided by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations [DEEWR]. Economic development practitioners are involved in the design and delivery of the courses.
