Course Description:

'' The basic aim of the Graduate Diploma is to meet the educational needs of Human Resources/Industrial Relations practitioners, including managers, unionists, employees or individuals working with industrial relations and human resource management issues. The program aims to provide students with a well developed knowledge of human resource management and industrial relations in a changing business environment. Based on adult learning principles, the emphasis is on relevance in learning and its application, the relationship between theory and practice with participants being encouraged to share their work experience with the group.

More particularly, the program is intended to provide students with:

the conceptual framework and skills that can be applied to practical human resource management and industrial relations problems;
the skills to develop and interpret human resource management and industrial relations policies, practices and procedures in ways that foster good employment relationships
development and application of negotiation, mediation and consulting skills;
an appreciation of the effect of changing environments, both internal and external, on the human resource management and industrial relations practices in an organisation, together with the wider socioeconomic, political and legal environments within which these operate;
knowledge of employment law and its application;
an opportunity to explore the dynamic nature of Australian human resource management and industrial relations and the workplace implications of issues such as organisational change, enterprise level negotiations, union strategy and change in government policy.
The Graduate Diploma is structured to provide a core set of foundation HR/IR studies in first year. In second year, students can combine specialist studies in different aspects of employment relations with an elective that either deepens their focus on HR/IR or includes broader organisational and management studies.
