Course Description:

'' The non-fiction film has served as prophet, reporter, historian, promoter, discoverer, and agitator. This two-evening survey course will examine the history of the documentary and its changing role in our culture. Using examples from films and videos from Lumiere to Burns, we will explore major trends in documentary style and tradition, including the newsreel, the coming of sound film, the ethnographic film, the poetic film, neorealist cinema, the news program, and the independent doc, within a theoretical and aesthetic framework. Linking themes in documentary production with periods in our social and cultural history, we will look at the major forces that have traditionally shaped documentary production in America and abroad. We will also look at how today’s global corporate culture is affecting documentary production and changing the role of the documentarist today. ...''
