However “operational excellence�is only a necessary condition for competitiveness, not a sufficient condition. Competitiveness must be sought and sustained through innovation.
Innovation is becoming an essential competency for companies trying to remain competitive in today’s global economy. The successful companies would no longer be able to maintain their privileged positions if they keep searching for excellence within the confines of their existing paradigm.
In order to boost the level of innovation, a company must have a formal plan for fostering creativity among the employees.
Recent advances in cognitive science and empirical research in technical innovation have provided a solid basis for training employees to be more creative in practical problem solving situations. The training helps direct their thought patterns in more creative channels. This new approach, often referred to as Directed Creativity, represents a great potential for enhancing the efficacy of operational improvement methods (Lean/Six Sigma) as well as design and development methods (DFSS).
