'' The course provides training in the composition of music for the screen at the highest professional level.
By the end of this course students will have had the opportunity to:
Gain a thorough knowledge of the techniques used in the composition of music soundtracks for screen productions Become familiar with the functions and conventions of music for the various forms of narratives. Know how to construct a music score at a professional level for a screen production. Learn to respond professionally to feedback from colleagues on their work. Develop skills in responding to a brief, in constructing music scores, and in contributing creatively to a screen production. The screen music course at AFTRS is one of the very few music courses in the world embedded in a film school, giving the student an opportunity to work directly with filmmakers on music for short films, interactive media productions, and other projects.
Through lectures, seminars, screenings, exercises, masterclasses, and industry guest speakers students will investigate areas such as Screen/Music Practice, Music Technologies and Dramaturgy of Music, by asking the following questions: What is the music for? What is it doing? How is it doing what it does?
Pre-requisites:
An ability to compose and perform music (in any genre.) An ability to arrange, orchestrate or record music (in any genre.) A familiarity with current music technologies, particularly digital sampling, sequencing, recording and mixing techniques. A familiarity with current practices in music written for the screen. A familiarity with a wide range of music styles. A demonstrated engagement with screen narratives. This can take the form of: A music score composed and produced for at least one screen production. A soundtrack or sound design produced for at least one screen production. Material written for the screen. Material written about the screen. It is not necessary to hold a degree in music composition or performance, or to have released a commercial recording on CD or DVD.
