'' This course recognises that governance concerns the existence, exercise and efficacy of power in and through a complex array of institutions and related arrangements involving the state, market and civil society, domestically and internationally. Concomitantly, it appreciates the need for systematic study and analyses of a wide variety of institutions, organisations, groups and individuals who or which are pursuing significant public purposes at local, territory/state, national and international levels.

The course will equip students with the knowledge and analytical capacity to make sense of, and to work effectively within and through, various modes of governance. The modes are diverse and multi-dimensional. They include numerous types of institutions and organisations, both public and private, and both for-profit and not-for-profit. They have different structural forms and operational methods. They have distinctive cultures which influence their decision-making and the utilisation of resources. They inevitably need to forge numerous relationships with one another, as well as with various groups and individuals in their spheres of action.

More specifically, the course will introduce participants to the structure and operation of various modes of governance, impart knowledge and skills which enable them to analyse, understand and work effectively within and through these modes, enhance their capacity to contribute in ways which are likely to maximise the potential of such modes, and develop their enthusiasm to engage in even higher level study in this exciting and important area of intellectual and practical inquiry.
