Course Description:

'' All films and television shows start with an intellectual property--a book, screenplay, comic book, play, article, life story, prior show, or movie. The rights to that source material must be acquired and memorialized in a contract before development and production begin. This course provides a comprehensive analysis of the deal-making process. Guest speakers take participants from bidding, negotiating the deal, and finalizing the contract, to acquiring music and other intellectual property for use in the final product. Topics and speakers (subject to availability) include options, purchases, first/exclusive looks, bidding wars, and attaching talent with Alicia Gordon, Agent, William Morris, and Danny Greenberg, Agent, William Morris; the deal: basic points with Danny Grover, Television Business Affairs, CAA, and Steve Plum, Senior Vice President, Business Affairs, 20th Century Fox; contingent compensation with Jay Dougherty, Associate Professor of Law, Loyola Law School, and Jerry Longarzo, Vice President, Business Affairs, ABC Entertainment; legal concerns with Craig Emanuel, partner Loeb & Loeb LLP, and Jamie Taylor, Vice President, Legal Affairs, Fox Searchlight Pictures; and music issues with Randy Spendlove, President Motion Picture Music, Miramax/Dimension Films, Joe Rangel, Creative Director Film & Television Music, EMI, and Lance Grode, Senior Vice President, Music Business Affairs, 20th Century Fox. Fulfills Producing/Business requirement in Certificate Program in Film, Television, and Digital Entertainment Media. Applies toward Business and Legal Affairs requirement in Certificate Program in The Business and Management of Film, Television, and Digital Entertainment Media.
