Course Description:

'' Buying, selling, or contracting to write a literary work (a script, book, play, treatment, or article) is only the first step. The way a deal is structured determines not only the financial rewards, but such key issues as creative control, credit, and attachment to subsequent productions. This course provides guidelines for understanding customary deal terms and preparing deal strategies, drawing on the experience of talent representatives and business and legal affairs executives from both major studios and production companies. Topics include negotiation strategies; literary option/ purchase agreements; pilot/series deals and overall writing deals for film and television; pay or play versus pay and play; the hows and whys of copyright; contingent compensation--net profits versus adjusted gross deals, credits, creative control, sequel rights; union issues, and perks. Applies toward Business and Legal Affairs requirement in Certificate Program in The Business and Management of Film, Television, and Digital Entertainment Media. ...''
