Training Course:

JavaScript for Non-Programmers

School/Trainer:

AcademyX, Inc.
San Francisco, California, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' In the first portion of this course, you will gain a solid understanding of important programming constructs and methodologies. You will learn how to approach a problem like a programmer would: breaking large problems into smaller tasks, writing and testing small chunks of code, and debugging. We cover:

input and output
conditionals
loops
Boolean operations
functions
objects, methods, and properties
Basic Syntax and Comments

First, we explain basic JavaScript syntax -- the grammar of the language -- using some simple JavaScript instructions. Then we show you how to add coments to your code. You will:

use instructions and their arguments
create single and multi-line comments in your code
use instructions and their arguments
enclose JavaScript instructions in HTML
Working with Variables

After covering basic syntax, we move on to the use of variables and values allowing for an infinite variety of responses from the user. We discuss:

what variables are whether they contain text, numbers or true/false values
how to use variables and the kinds of operations they can help accomplish
basic operations that can be performed on or with each data type
Implementing Branching and Decisions

It is often necessary to tailor your site’s functionality to each user depending on the input they provide. For example, a JavaScirpt tax calculator would use different tax rates depending on which filing status a user chose. This is achieved through the use of conditionals and branching within your code. You will learn how to:

compare inputs with predefined conditions
direct script to a particular either/or options set
create a script that checks for multiple conditions
Using Loops and Repetition

Occasionally, after a user provides information, it is necessary to repeat an operation on or with that information until some requirement is met using a process called looping. In the tax example above, you might use a loop to iterate over all the deductions claimed, subtracting them one by one from income. In this section we explore:

the syntax used when creating a loop
how to specify the number of iterations
how to increment a counter to keep track of iterations
Functions and Code Reuse

To maximize efficiency in your code you can collect a set of steps or actions within your script into a group called a function which you can then refer to from anywhere in the code. This modularity makes it easier to isolate chunks of code that different team members can work on independently. This portion of the course examines:

the benefits of functions
the qualities that make a function reusable
how to define and run a function
processing information obtained from the user’s input
how to handle information that a function returns after executing
Working With Objects and Methods

“Object Oriented Programming(OOP) languages are so called because they group data and actions into “objectsfor organizational ease. Using JavaScript’s built-in support for commonly used objects you will gain hands-on experience with:

the various types of objects, such as arrays and dates, the Document Object Model (DOM) and custom objects
creating and defining objects and their properties
pre-defined methods applied to objects
cleaning up and extracting numerical data from a string input
...''
