Course Description:

'' In this age of heightened security threats, information system providers and users need to protect against hostile viruses and programs that can destroy or pilfer data and crash computer systems. Often, the only means of protection is prosecution after a security breach. The methodology for obtaining legal evidence following a computer attack has become a science in its own right, and this course presents tools and methods for gathering the information necessary to successfully prosecute intruders, and to evaluate system vulnerabilities. Major topics include understanding relevant laws and individual rights to privacy, what an organization may or may not do to prosecute an attack, ethics of online monitoring and usage, how to handle an intrusion incident, how incident response teams function, analyzing "trouble tickets" to determine whether an incident has occurred, and knowing computer forensics issues and practices. Prerequisite: X 417.71 Introduction to Information Security and X 417.10 Introduction to Data Communications or consent of instructor.
