'' (Combined fee of $2095 if taken with 881.185 Design of Wireless Modems.) This course is intended for scientists, systems engineers, and software/hardware engineers who need an introductory or refresher course on phase-locked loops (PLLs). Because most algorithms and architectures for modems are based upon PLLs, a solid foundation is essential to design or understand high-performance communications systems. The course begins with the traditional analysis techniques for analog PLLs and reviews such techniques as partial fraction expansion, root locus, and Bode analysis. Real-time MATLAB and Mathematica simulations/analysis used in the lectures allow participants dynamic visualization of PLL responses and performance. Digital PLLs are emphasized from the introductory difference equations to the nonlinear Chapman-Kolmogorov analysis. A half-day laboratory provides participants with hands-on analysis and simulations of both digital and analog phase-locked loops. The course should enable participants to compute first, second, and third order PLL designs; perform root locus and Bode stability analysis of analog PLLs; compute the nonlinear phase-plane trajectories and acquisition of analog PLLs; transform analog PLL designs to the digital domain; synthesize digital PLL designs from difference equations; perform Jury tests and root locus stability analysis of digital PLLs; use numerical analysis techniques to determine the nonlinear performance of digital PLLs; and perform phase noise analysis of traditional and fractional-N synthesizers. ...''
