Course Description:

'' Berkleemusic’s Professional Certificate in Writing and Producing Music for Games with Logic gives you the foundation you need to succeed at a game development company or as a freelance game audio professional. This six-course program is build around the powerful Logic Pro software and Berklee’s renowned approaches to writing, producing, arranging, and orchestrating. It also gives you gaming-specific sound production and engineering skills through the study of a cutting-edge gaming curriculum developed and taught by Berklee professors.

The program begins with the fundamentals of music production and what makes a good mix in Critical Listening 1. This course helps you recognize the importance of the mixing process through a combination of weekly training drills, analysis of classic recordings, and comparison of various mixing styles. You’ll learn to identify width and depth, frequency range, dynamics, and the different mix approaches used in various musical genres. By the end of the course you’ll be able to recognize techniques such as panning, alternate types and uses of reverb, delay, compression, and different types of distortion. Not only will you learn what elements are most important in a mix, but also how to optimize a mix to make it as compelling as possible.

From there, you’ll learn to become a power user of Logic Pro in both Desktop Music Production for Mac and Producing Music with Logic. Through hands-on lessons and weekly projects, you will turn your Mac into a complete virtual recording studio, mastering concepts like digitization, signal flow, multi-tracking, EQ, signal processing, mix balance, reverb, and MIDI. You’ll learn to choose the right tools for producing your music, configure home studio hardware components, edit and create your own synthesizer sounds, use samples and loops in a variety of musical settings, mix multi-track audio projects, and make a final master suitable for distribution. You’ll learn Logic’s advanced mixing tools and techniques, such as setting up software instruments with multiple outputs, sidechaining, and mix automation. Producing Music with Logic provides many critical listening examples, interactive activities, and "power user" tips and tricks for using Logic Pro, which illustrate the extensive capabilities of this dynamic music production software.

With the knowledge of Berklee’s production techniques and mastery of Logic under your belt, you’ll move on to hone your arranging skills. In Arranging 1: Rhythm Section, you’ll learn how to write for the rhythm section—drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards—and create killer arrangements that really groove. This course directs you on everything you’ll need to create an effective arrangement—including rhythm section notation, adaptation of the melody and chords, intro’s and endings, articulations and dynamics, and how to create an emotional contour throughout the arrangement.

Next, you’ll study Orchestration, where you’ll further expand your writing knowledge base, and apply traditional and emerging orchestration techniques to both sampled and live performances. The course also teaches students how to create modern day orchestral sounds and identify the characteristics and idiomatic writing techniques for each orchestral instrument family—strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion—as well as approaches for writing for full orchestra.

The program concludes by applying all of your studies directly towards gaming in Introduction to Game Audio. You’ll begin with an overview of game sound development, studying the basics of sound effects libraries and working with animation. You’ll also cover typical studio sound effects and sound manipulation, and address the technical hurdles you may encounter. You’ll move on to more advanced concepts and techniques, including recording custom effects, proper integration of audio, and gaming-specific mixing techniques. You’ll also examine the business side of gaming and how the industry works—who’s involved and what their roles are, scheduling, contracts, and finalizing a workflow—and learn to work collaboratively and under the direction of a team leader. By the end of the course, you’ll have created full audio—including sound design, dialogue, and music—for a game to add to your portfolio.

At the end of this program, you’ll have mastered Logic Pro, learned Berklee’s tools and techniques towards music production and arranging, and understand how to develop music and songs for interactive environments. You’ll be able to write and edit music interactively, and create professional-sounding and artistic video game soundtracks, incorporating dialogue, sound design, and music. You’ll have gained great credentials for your resume and built up an impressive portfolio of music and audio examples—and be prepared to take the next step in a career in the game music industry.
