Course Description:

'' A successful songwriter needs to not only have a firm handle on the creative elements that contribute to a hit song, but also a thorough understanding of the operations, opportunities, and income streams available to songwriters within the music business. The Master Certificate in Songwriting and Music Business provides songwriters with the necessary tools to create engaging, effective songs, as well as the knowledge they’ll need to navigate and succeed in the rapidly changing music industry.

Your coursework starts with the nuts and bolts of Music Business 101, where you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the state of music industry as a whole. You’ll learn about each segment of the industry—recording, publishing, marketing, and live performance—and discover the many ways in which they tie together. You’ll learn where and how money is made, who the key players are, how deals are made, how to protect your creative and business interests, and how emerging technologies are changing the way music is made, distributed, marketed, and heard.

Next, you’ll further explore those changes in The Future of Music and the Music Industry. The course challenges conventional thinking about the business of music and explores new ways of creating, promoting, and distributing it. Over twelve weeks, the course examines a different aspect of the music industry, reflects on the changes that are affecting it, and evaluates how these changes, technologies, innovations, and powerful trends might directly affect your own plans. This course is essential for all artists, songwriters, and music business people seeking success in the future.

Once you have this broad industry knowledge under your belt, you’ll focus on advancing your songwriting skills by learning the secrets used by the pros, and in the process begin to discover and hone your own personal songwriting style.

In Lyric Writing: Tools and Strategies you’ll learn proven writing methods that GRAMMY Award-winning writers have used to create effective verses, unforgettable choruses, and other components that are key to constructing the lyrics of a successful song. You’ll learn how to brainstorm your ideas better and spark creativity to generate vivid and descriptive lyrics.

You’ll then move on to Songwriting Workshop: Harmony. This course will take you deep inside a key component of the songwriting process—crafting the chord progressions that shape the mood and feel of a song. You’ll learn the secrets of “power progressions, the classic patterns that have been used in dozens of hit songs and that you too can use as the basis for your own inspiration.

From there, you’ll look at the other side of the songwriting equation in the Songwriting Workshop: Melody course. You’ll gain an understanding of the power of pitch and the ways it can be used to shape a melody, introduce tension, and resolve that tension strongly to underline the lyrical thrust of your song. You’ll learn how to build a hook, and how to write melodies over and across chord changes that take advantage of the different note and scale options.

You’ll finish up the songwriting component of the program in Commercial Songwriting Techniques. You’ll learn to apply a time-tested, ten-step process for reproducing traits of hit songs, and to streamline your writing with commercial/financial success in mind. Along the way you’ll also learn to create a solid connection with your audience using enhanced description skills and writing tools that will help you discover your own unique writing voice.

The program continues with a thorough study of one of the most crucial areas to the success of an artist in the new music business economy: touring. In Concert Touring, you’ll cover the essential components of a successful tour—management team assembly, typical types of industry deals, alternative streams of income, and who gets paid what in the end—and learn how to develop a plan that works for your particular situation. By the end of the course, you’ll understand the preparations and logistics involved in developing, budgeting, and executing everything from individual performances to entire tours—from start to finish.

You’ll then focus on protecting your stake in the songs you write and record in Music Publishing 101. The course will teach you everything you need to know about the practice of publishing, pitching, and promoting your music, and provide a step-by-step guide to topics like copyright administration, the role of performance rights organizations, how to set up an effective accounting system for your catalog, how to market and promote your compositions, and how to turn your demos and lyrics into a real, independent business. By the end of the class, you will not only have a firm understanding of copyrights, royalty and fee structures, and how to pitch and evaluate a song, but you will have gained the skills to set up your own publishing company and a powerful Rolodex of influential industry contacts you can use to take your career to the next level.

This Master Certificate in Songwriting and Music Business provides a valuable skill set for any songwriter who is looking to develop advanced professional writing skills, while learning how to navigate through the music business with the goal of financial success.
