'' An understanding of the medical system, the ability to bridge the linguistic and culture gap between provider and patient, and awareness of how the active role healthcare interpreters engage in during an exchange contributes to the success of interpreted sessions. An overview of the American healthcare system and how interpreters function in a variety of health care settings will help participants learn and define the interpreter’s role, responsibilities, and boundaries. Case scenarios analyze the complex linguistic, cultural and ethical challenges of interpreting in healthcare. These include doctor-patient appointments, hospitals and mental health counseling sessions. Discussions focus on applying problem-solving strategies.
