Course Description:
'' If you are proficient in Vietnamese and English and would like to embark on a new career that utilizes your language skills, check out the Certificate in Legal Interpretation (Vietnamese/English). This program can help you take your language skills to the next level and prepare for a challenging and in-demand career. The Certificate in Legal Interpretation (Vietnamese/English) addresses the chronic shortage of qualified Vietnamese-English interpreters and translators in the courts and related areas of the law.
Graduates of the Certificate in Legal Interpretation (Vietnamese/English) will have the skills needed to succeed in this field, as well as preparation to pass the state examination to become certified interpreter/translators. Special features of this program include a program orientation in which guest speakers talk about the interpreting profession and current employment opportunities; access to a language lab to practice interpreting skills; and an internship program in legal interpretation.
The certificate in Legal Interpretation (Vietnamese/English) has required courses totaling a minimum of 141 hours of lecture and discussion for certificate graduates. Completion of the elective Court/Legal Internship will bring the total to 204 hours. A minimum of 14.1 CEUs will be awarded to the certificate graduate.
Program Objective
Graduates of this program will be able to:
- Identify and discuss the process of translation and interpretation
- Demonstrate an understanding and exhibit a high standard of professionalism
- Understand the legal interpretation field; its business and legal practices; social issues; and the professional codes of conduct and ethics
- Understand the problems and complexities of interpretation, and the roles and responsibilities of a legal interpreter
- Identify and perform interpretation-related skills necessary for a variety of professional environments
- Identify, understand and use pertinent terminology
- Identify problems and apply problem-solving strategies in a legal interpretation setting
- Demonstrate awareness of culture and linguistic sensitivity between source and target language
- Carry out research to prepare for interpretation assignments
- Be better prepared to take the California Court Interpreter Certification Exam
