Course Description:
'' Evaluating Health and Fitness provides information and experience in the administration and interpretation of health risk appraisals, athletic performance assessment, health-related fitness tests, and functional skills. Tests include vitals, body composition analysis, strength, endurance, flexibility assessment, agility, anaerobic power, functional performance, lung function, and cardio-respiratory endurance testing. This course is designed to run concurrent with HES-215, Exercise Leadership. Prerequisite: HES-110 and BIOL-211, or permission of the instructor. Current first aid and CPR are required for admittance to this course. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours.
Course Objectives and Grading Information Course Objectives:
At the end of this course the student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing/assessing:
Health appraisal and SOAP notes, including PAR-Questionnaire, health history and notetaking and report writing Vitals, including blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and respiration Body composition, flexibility, muscle endurance and muscle strength, including body composition using skin fold calipers, trunk flexion using the sit and reach protocol, appropriate muscle strength and endurance testing, and functional, senior, and athletic testing. Develop an exercise prescription by: Demonstration, evaluation, and supervision of upper and lower body strength and conditioning exercises using a variety of equipment including self, free weights, stability ball, and dumbbells. Design appropriate stretching and trunk stabilization program. Cardiovascular Fitness Assessment using a Monark Cycle Ergometer Ability to monitor resting and exercising heart rate (radial pulse), resting and exercising blood pressure, and rate of perceived exertion. Setting appropriate warm-up, endurance phase, and cool-down workload depending on client status and responses to exercise. Recording of data (e.g. workloads, duration, blood pressure, heart rate, etc). ...''
