Course Description:

'' Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing introduces the study of adult, child, and adolescent client systems experiencing acute and chronic alterations in mental health. The Neuman Systems Model is the framework for the study of client systems in lecture, in the campus laboratories, and in acute and community settings. Prerequisites: NURS-212, NURS-215, and a passing score on the nursing dosage calculations proficiency exam. Corequisites: NURS-213 and NURS-216. Thirty-five and one-half hours of lecture, five hours of laboratory, and sixty-nine hours of clinical experience each term. Four credits. Four billable hours. Offered Spring Term only. Additional $50 fee required.

Course Objectives and Grading Information
Course Objectives:

To demonstrate in the clinical setting, in individual and group conferences, in written communications, and on written examinations knowledge of the concepts of psychiatric/mental health. The student will:

Practice nursing within an established theoretical framework, the Neuman Systems Model, for client systems experiencing alterations in mental health.
Use the nursing process to prioritize nursing care for the client system with alterations in mental health, experiencing stressors from the internal and external environment, as a means of decision-making for refining and evaluating practice.
Use critical thinking and applied theories, principles, evidenced-based nursing, and concepts in making decisions to assist client systems experiencing alterations in mental health to attain, maintain and retain stability with assistance.
Provide safe, competent nursing care.
Implement comprehensive therapeutic communication skills, both written and verbal, when interacting with the client system experiencing alterations in mental health and members of the health care team during primary, secondary and tertiary prevention with assistance.
Provide client teaching for client systems experiencing alterations in mental health to strengthen normal and flexible lines of defense with assistance.
Demonstrate through practice, the legal and ethical parameters while caring for client systems experiencing alterations in mental health who are retaining, attaining, and/or maintaining the goal of system stability.
Analyze the impact of one’s own behaviors, attitudes, and values in helping the client system dealing with mental health stressors affecting physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual variables.
Demonstrate accountability for decision-making related to nursing by internalizing professional workforce behaviors.
Demonstrate commitment to continued learning by self-directed learning, professional growth, and professional organization membership for psychiatric/mental health registered nurses.
Delegate care of the client system to appropriately prepared members of the health care team in acute and community mental health settings
