Course Description:
'' Nursing Care of Children introduces the study of the pediatric client system experiencing acute alterations in wellness. The Neuman Systems Model is the framework for the study of client systems in lecture, in the campus laboratories, and in acute care settings. Prerequisites: NURS-210 and a passing score on the nursing dosage calculations proficiency exam. Corequisite: NURS-212. Thirty hours of lecture and forty-five hours of clinical experience each term. Three credits. Three billable hours. Offered Fall Term only. Additional $50 fee required.
Course Objectives and Grading Information
Course Objectives:
To demonstrate in the clinical setting, in individual and group conferences, in written communications, and on written examinations knowledge a continuing knowledge of the concepts of professional nursing. The student will:
Practice nursing within an established theoretical framework, the Neuman Systems Model, at the generalist level for the pediatric family client system across the illness-wellness continuum.
Utilize nursing process to prioritize nursing care for the pediatric family client system experiencing stressors from the internal and external environment process as a means of decision-making for refining and evaluating practice.
Use critical thinking and applied theories, principles, and evidenced based nursing concepts in making decisions to assist the pediatric family client system to attain, maintain and retain stability.
Provide safe, competent nursing care based on principles of parent child health.
Implement comprehensive therapeutic communication skills, both written and verbal, when interacting with the pediatric family client system, members of the health care team, and significant others during primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.
Provide client teaching to strengthen normal and flexible lines of defense.
Demonstrate through practice, the legal and ethical parameters while caring for the pediatric family client system that is retaining, attaining, and/or maintaining the goal of system stability.
Analyze the impact of one’s own behaviors, attitudes, and values in helping the pediatric family client system deal with physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual variables.
Demonstrate accountability for decision-making related to nursing by internalizing professional workforce behaviors.
Demonstrate commitment to continued learning by self-directed learning, professional growth, and professional organization membership.
Delegate care of the pediatric family client system, with assistance, to appropriately prepared health care personnel.
