Course Description:
'' Fundamentals of Public Speaking gives practice in the principles of selecting, analyzing, evaluating, organizing, and communicating information and points of view through the delivery of various types of speeches for various occasions. Practice in speech assessment, both oral and written, will be emphasized in speech situations. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-101 plus assessment for placement in ENGL-101 or better. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours.

The student will able to:
Prepare and present four major speeches with satisfactory proficiency in the categories of informative, demonstrative, persuasive and special occasion. Analyze an audience when selecting a speech topic. Support speech content with library research and citations. Construct organized outlines that include an introduction, a body with two or more main points, a conclusion, and a bibliography in MLA format. Select and use an audio and/or visual aid for a minimum of one speech. The student should follow the rules for use of a visual aid. Communicate presentations using specific language choices and principles of satisfactory delivery style. Elements include eye contact, gestures and movement, facial expression, pitch, volume, articulation, and rate. Name the components of the communication process and explain how the process works. Discriminate between the elements of informative and persuasive speaking. Evaluate one’s own performances and the performances of others. Give examples of reasoning in persuasive speaking. Name and use motivating strategies in a persuasive speech. Define fallacies of reasoning. Integrate reduction techniques to bring communication anxiety to manageable level. ...''
