Course Description:
'' Introduction to Interpersonal Communication investigates human communication from both a theoretical and an experiential framework. Areas of study include perception, the development of the self, language, non-verbal communication, listening, and patterns of healthy communication. Individual communication skills will be investigated, analyzed, and practiced by the student. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-101, and assessment for placement in ENGL-101 or better. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours.

Course Objectives:
The student will be able to successfully complete the following core competencies as follows:
Recognize the purpose of the communication (to give/receive information, to express emotions, to check perceptions, to give/cope with criticism, to resolve conflict.)
State clear goals (Each student will decide on a personal communication goal to work on during the semester.)
Organize content effectively (refers to organization of messages both oral and written.)
Employ effective strategies for delivering and receiving messages both verbal and nonverbal by:
paraphrasing
perception checking
using Pillow Method
clearly expressing emotions
preventing defensiveness
resolving conflict
being assertive
monitoring body language
Use effective language through class exercises and participation.
Identify and use methods to manage communication anxiety (gain communication confidence in interpersonal interactions/relationships through a variety of assignments and activities.)
