Course Description:

'' French Language: all levels - elementary through advanced, 4 levels. Courses offered year-around by the "Semester, or by the Summer "Terms". Also, there is a "preparatory" course prior to the Fall Semester for improvement of French ability before the Semester begins. Courses are 20 hours per week during the semester, and up to 22 hrs. per week during the summer, M-F. All students take a placement test to determine level. (see listing)

Cultural Courses include: French Literature, Philosophy, Theatre, History, History of Art, Music, Economy of France, French Cooking, Modern French Society. Students must be "intermediate" level (Niveau 2) before enrolling in the cultural courses. All courses taught in French.

Beginner Level: Designed for students who wish to acquire a good command of simple syntax and basic vocabulary in one or two semesters. Two courses are offered: one for complete beginners (Debutante 1), the other for students having already acquired elementary notions of the language(Debutante 2). Students at this level may also attend optional courses, but workshops in French Culture, adapted to their level, are available.

French 101, 102 (Elementary French I & II). Courses focus on acquiring solid basics of French language. Emphasis is on listening and speaking, with writing comprehension included as well. Mastering daily situations such as shopping, using public transportation, meeting people are all included in these courses.

Lower Intermediate: This level enables students to master complex syntax and everyday vocabulary. Emphasis is oral practice. Students may attend optional courses in French culture adapted to their level.

French 201, 202 (Lower and Upper Elementary)

Upper Intermediate: Designed for students who have adequate command of written and oral French. Emphasis on improving communication skills.

Advanced: Focuses on complex structures of written and oral French. Current events are used as basic course materials.

French 301, 401 (Advanced and Superior Level)

Higher: Teaching at this level takes place during the 2nd semester only. This course is designed for students who wish to specialize in the French Language, and is based on complex texts dealing with human sciences, literature, etc. Course aims to develop the expression of abstract ideas in a foreign language. In addition to language classes, optional courses in French Culture, students are required to attend two tutorials at the Faculte des Lettres with French Students.
