Course Description:
'' "Project Management" is a course that covers the fundamentals of managing projects with the newcomer in mind. Project management is the discipline of organizing and managing resources in such a way that these resources deliver all the work required to complete a project within defined scope, time, and cost constraints.
This course assumes students have no prior knowledge about project management, and delivers lessons and examples to build management skills. We review the examination of the identification, selection, and planning of projects. Specific topics include: organization structure, project selection and scope definition, project team selection and development, work breakdown structures and statements of work, project scheduling, and budgeting, resource allocation, risk management planning, and project controlling.
Students who are preparing for the PMI (Project Management Institute) Certification (PMP or CAPM) can also use this course to prep for the exam.
Course Outcome
After completing Project Management Professional, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:
Provide students with a basic understanding of project management principles and practices. Increase the students ability to function effectively on a project team. Use of contemporary techniques and technology for project management. Examination of successful business projects, especially the role of project planning and management Help prepare the student for the PMP Examination. Recommended Prerequisites
No prior experience necessary, although 1-2 years experience as a project manager or project team member recommended Assessment
Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and 1 final exam.

Lesson Overview Topics 1 Introduction to Project Management. This chapter reviews project management, projects, organizational structure, the roles and responsibilities of the project manager, project team, management, and stakeholders. What is a project? Objectives Project team: roles and responsibilities Organizational structure 2 Project Conception. This chapter reviews the four basic operations of projection management. How a project is conceived, evaluated, and granted will be reviewed. Project phases Phase inputs / outputs Project conception Feasibility analysis Financial analysis Project charter 3 Project Planning. This chapter reviews how the project is planned and organized. Here, we review the Statement of Work, Work Breakdown Structure, Risk Management, Schedule, and Resource and Budget Management planning activities. Statement of Work Constraints Assumptions Risk analysis Kick off meeting Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Responsibility Matrix Schedule development Critical chain Resource planning and budgeting 4 Project Execution and Controlling. This chapter reviews the executing and controlling step of the project. Here, we cover how to monitor and assess project performance, schedule, and cost. Other topics include communication plan development, change control, conflict resolution, and team building. Monitoring: Schedule Gantt chart PERT diagram Monitoring: Results Monitoring: Cost Monitoring: Earned Value Communication Change control Team building Variance reports 5 Project Closure. This chapter reviews the final step of project management- closure. Here, we cover the evaluation, auditing, and termination steps. Finally, we close the project administratively and with the final report.
