The course contains a short introduction to the National Building Code of Canada, NBCC 2005, and then goes into detail on how to calculate the expected environmental and occupational loads on a structure, which includes dead, live, snow, wind, and seismic loads. The course then goes into the design of steel, reinforced concrete, and wooden structural elements by limit states design according to the Canadian Standard Association CSA codes S16-01, A23.3-04, and O86-01, respectively. The course also includes the connection design of steel and wooden members.
Course Outline and Covered Topics:
1. Limit states design fundamentals and concepts. 2. Calculating the loads on the structure due to use and occupancy, snow, wind, and earthquake loads according to the NBC 2005. 3. Evaluating the load combinations on structures according to the NBC 2005 4. Evaluating the load combinations on structures according to the NBC 2005 and determining the governing loads for design. 5. Structural steel material properties and design fundamentals 6. Design of steel tension members, compression members (columns) and laterally supported and unsupported steel beams. 7. Design of steel welded and bolted connections. 8. Reinforced concrete material properties and design fundamentals. This includes properties and design requirements for reinforcing steel 9.
