Course Description:
'' This course consists of two 2-hour lectures and two full days in the field. The evening lectures are an overview of current avalanche awareness and avoidance, including up-to-date companion rescue procedures. The two Saturday field sessions cover applying this knowledge with special emphasis on backcountry rescue, snowpit analysis, stability tests, and terrain evaluation. Students must attend all classes and sessions to receive their completion certificate. Participants must provide their own cross-country skis (with climbing skins) or snowshoes will be available for loan at the pre-trip meeting. A limited supply of avalanche beacons, probes, and shovels are available on a first-come basis. Transportation by van pool is included in course fee or students may drive themselves.
