Course Description:

'' This is a one year full-time course beginning in September each year. There will be two or three week vacations at Christmas/New Year (December/January) and Easter (March/April), and some students take a brief break in June before completing their dissertation.

Semester one
(September-January)

You will study four core (compulsory) modules:

Sequence Information Analysis
Covers the basic theory and practical techniques of bioinformatics. Particular focus is given to the application of bioinformatics to problem solving and experimental design for real biological problems
Programming Tools
Introduces object-oriented programming to enable you to design, implement and test programs of moderate complexity in the bioinformatics field
Database Construction and Information Retrieval
An introduction to relational databases and object-oriented relational databases via Oracle. The problem of information retrieval is viewed from this perspective but also will look at leading-edge approaches
Research Methods
Introduces and develops the concepts, organisational structure and deliverables of a research project using qualitative and quantitative methods.
Semester two (January-May)

You will study four core (compulsory) modules:

Genome Analysis
A comprehensive overview and analysis of the theory and practice of genome sequence analysis and expression of the genome
Three-Dimensional Structure and Visualisation
Introduces the programming techniques required for the development of Graphical Data (1D, 2D and 3D) their interfaces and visualisation
Current Research Topics and Bioinformatics
Discusses how to carry out bioinformatics research. It highlights some of the current research areas where bioinformatics is being applied
Statistics in Genetics
Introduces modern statistical computing and graphics environments, in the context of problems from genetics.
Semester three(June-September)

You will complete a dissertation on a bioinformatics topic of your choice.

Optional placement opportunities

We offer a great opportunity to boost your career prospects through an optional 12 month placement as part of your postgraduate studies. We have a dedicated Industrial Placement Unit which will help you obtain a one year placement. Once in placement, you will be supported by your visiting tutor to ensure that you gain maximum benefit from the experience. Placements begin after the taught component of the course has been completed - usually around June ? and last for 12 months. When you return from work placement you then begin the dissertation stage of your course.

Teaching/assessment
There will be a mixture of lecture, tutorial and laboratory work. Some work will involve working in a group and communicating your results to the rest of the student body. Labs will be staffed, though you will be expected to make use of lab facilities at other times to support the work done in the taught sessions. There will be formative feedback at regular intervals usually via lab or tutorial sessions so that you are kept fully informed of your progress and areas that needs attention.
