'' Semester one (September-January)
Research Methodology for Design Entrepreneurs: Develops knowledge and understanding of the nature of research. Examine and evaluate current issues in research, in particular design research, building a portfolio of research skills that can be utilised throughout your career Marketing for the Creative Entrepreneur: Considers marketing and corporate strategy issues in relation to activities of the design entrepreneur. Investigates methods and tools for marketing design-based products and services to consumers (b2c), businesses (b2b) and the public sector. You will also examine the utilisation of corporate competences to gain competitive advantage Critical Perspectives in Design Management: This considers the discipline of design management. You will develop your own definition and appreciation of the discipline, and its role within a broader high technological industrial context Strategic Design for Competitive Advantage: This examines sustainable and resource efficient design, processes, aesthetic, function, and technology of design. Through the analysis of globally recognised products from a resource efficient perspective, the communication of aesthetics, images, styles and forms is reviewed. On a practical level, students from both design and non-designbased backgrounds investigate and analyse the design process to reach a common level of understanding. Semester two (February-May)
You will complete three core modules and choose one elective from a choice of three:
Business Planning for the Creative Entrepreneur: Develops the key business planning skills and knowledge to identify potential for a new product/service/experience and mobilise the necessary business resources to bring the idea to market
Strategic Markets for Design in the Global Economy: Examine the complex nature of customer needs together with global manufacturing processes, technological systems and the continuing internationalisation of markets. It enables you to understand that the future of successful business innovations will depend on delivering a range of benefits better than international competitors
Design as a Strategic Business Tool: This examines the use of design as a tool to influence organisational change. Using a range of sources including key case studies, you will explore the influence of design on international culture and business methodologies. At the end of this module you will be required to make predictions concerning the future application of design within the strategic business environment.
Choose one module from the following:
Design in Political Context: Considers the impact and influence of national and international politics within the context of design and creativity. You will examine the ways in which national and international leaders have identified design as a tool for promoting business growth in international markets, and as a means of enhancing economic and political influence
Managing Business Web Presence: This will introduce you to a critical appraisal of web design and promotion. You will examine and contextualise advances in web architecture, technology, interface, navigation, graphic and real-time design. At a practical level, you will explore complex web design and management through prototyping, production techniques, design/application testing and promotion techniques
The Nature of Creativity: Explores creativity as a concept that must be present across the entire business environment. You will analyse SMEs to identify the existence, extent and purpose of creativity as both theoretical and practical processes. You are also taught how to identify the presence and nature of creative endeavour, the environment and factors necessary to nurture it, and as a result become more effective in its utilisation.
Semester three (June-September)
