Training Course:English Language Teaching Workshop (Master Degree)School/Trainer:De Montfort University Leicester, United Kingdom
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' The MA in ELT is broad in range and flexible in structure. It has been designed to appeal to applicants who wish to study ELT at higher degree level, but who do not want to specialise immediately, with a view to selecting a discrete area of study for the dissertation. There may, however, be pathways of particularly compatible modules which you might choose and guidance will be offered in this matter upon enrolment. The MA is equally suitable for those wishing to take an MA as a qualification in itself and for those thinking of moving on to doctoral research in ELT.
You will be able to select from a range of taught modules and, in consultation with the course leader, choose a dissertation topic which speaks to your own interests and allows you to pursue a particular, period, genre, author or critical issue in greater depth. It will also encourage reflection on where ELT is going in the 21st century and make sure you are aware of major theoretical developments in this and cognate areas. Full research training at the appropriate level is provided in the form of the compulsory Research Methods module. The MA in ELT makes full use of the range of academic expertise within the School, with modules designed to speak to the research interests of staff as well as offering you variety and intellectual challenge.
Teaching/assessment
International students come to study in the UK because the quality of our teaching is amongst the best in the world. Taught modules will normally require some preparatory reading and weekly attendance over a 12-week period. Formal classroom contact will normally be a block of two hours per week per module, and will take the form of a workshop. The term workshop is used rather than lecture or seminar to indicate that the two-hour session will be used flexibly by the tutor to include student presentations, small group exercises, screening of film clips, interactive short lectures, plenary discussion or a formal lecture/seminar split. These sessions can be supported by individual or small group tutorials. The workshop structure places a clear emphasis on student participation and contribution, and you are expected to undertake extensive preparation for each session - usually taking the form of required reading and secondary research.
The dissertation depends much more on one-toone and small group tutorial contact. Here the emphasis is placed on independent study, and the tutor acts as facilitator, guiding and monitoring your progress.
