Course Description:

'' The Department of Accounting and Finance is a major provider of accounting education in the UK. The British government’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) awarded the Department the best possible results for the high quality of our teaching and student support, and in The Sunday Times University Guide 2004, we were the only university in England listed as ’excellent’ for Accounting and Finance. Staff offer a wealth of industrial, professional practice and academic experience. Many are actively engaged in research and consultancy, and the Department’s practical approach to the subject is reflected in its regular publication of the Journal of Applied Accounting Research. The Department also has strong links with the major professional bodies. We are a Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Quality Partner and an Approved Learning Partner holding Gold Status.

The course begins with a range of core modules designed to underpin key business and financial principles. These are followed by a choice of electives aimed at developing strategic knowledge and skills in relation to the specialist area of international finance.

Induction: Foundations of Management (September)

This five day induction introduces you to the course team and each other, and focuses on the foundations of management, including subjects such as effective communication, the business environment and quantitative methods.

Semesters one and two (September-May)

Following the induction week, you study six core (compulsory) modules covering essential key themes in business and finance:

Critical Perspectives in Global Management

You will also select two elective modules from the following:

International Taxation Policies

Business Ethics, Environment and Society
Managing e-Business in a Global Economy
Globalisation
International Trade - Theory and Policy.
Semester three (June-September)

The final stage of this Master’s degree is the dissertation, a detailed piece of written research with an international focus, on a finance-related topic of your choice. You can undertake your dissertation in subjects as diverse as banking, insurance, business forecasting, accounting, international trade, taxation and many more.

The Research Methodology module studied in semester two prepares you for the dissertation. Support is offered by a nominated supervisor who, where possible, will be a subject expert in your chosen field. Dissertation subjects normally reflect areas of relevance to your career ambitions or have a practical application for your employer/sponsor.
