Course Description:
'' Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science deals with the development and manufacture of medicines and personal care products. This course integrates practical and theoretical work to give the knowledge and skills required to establish a career in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic and allied industries. Although the final products are used for different purposes and in different ways, the science and technology of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and toiletries is very similar. Delivered by a team of subject experts, the course is designed to provide a solid introduction to formulation, through a comprehensive course in compounding, and process technology. Subjects such as chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology, which give the scientific background are also strongly featured. Personal and communication skills are developed at the same time. Year two provides an emphasis on integrated work in product development and formulation, analytical chemistry, applied pharmacology, applied microbiology, process technology and quality issues. Year three applies skills in an optional industrial placement to the development and manufacture of products in the formulation laboratory, manufacturing department or related business area of a pharmaceutical or cosmetics company. Core study in the final year involves deeper study of dosage form design, manufacturing processes, product safety and analytical science. An individual research project is a major part of this year.
