Training Course:Nutrient Removal In Wastewater TreatmentSchool/Trainer:Educational Program Innovations Center Mississauga, ON, Canada
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' A growing number of coastal areas of the world’s oceans are being deprived of dissolved oxygen at an alarming rate. These areas, considered aquatic dead zones, are expanding on a global scale and severely threatening marine life. The negative economic impact on fisheries, tourism, industrial jobs, decreased property values, reduction in species diversity and public health costs can be severe. Scientific research confirms that dead zones are caused by nitrogen and phosphorous essential elements in the uncontrollable growth of algae and aquatic plants.) Phosphorous and nitrogen are found in agricultural runoff, (fertilizers), sewage flowing into rivers, streams and oceans, and by the combustion of fossil fuels. Both elements are generally termed as life-giving elements, and municipal and industrial waste water contain important quantities of phosphorus and nitrogen. In Canada, the efforts in nutrient removal in wastewater treatment plants are very modest. Therefore, the removal of these nutrients has become an important facet of wastewater treatment. The phenomenon and effects associated with excess nutrient is called eutrophication, and have important social and economic repercussions. The removal of both nutrients can proceed biologically or chemically, and can take place in different kind of bioreactors. The selection of the most adequate process based on technical and economic considerations will be the basis of this course.
Objective To provide a comprehensive understanding of the chemical and biological fundamentals of nutrient removal, economics associated with eutrophication, bioreactors and their operation in nutrient removal, and their comparative effectiveness.
Who Should Attend Municipal engineers, technical employees of regulatory agencies, consulting engineers involved in plant design, construction, monitoring and control superintendents, foremen, operators in wastewater treatment plants and individuals who want to update skills, and establish or improve their environmental programs.
