'' The best way to think of Tokyo is not as one city, but as several mini-cities linked by the railway and subway systems. A useful point of reference is the Yamanote line, a train loop which connects or encloses virtually everything of interest to the visitor. Sightseeing destinations outside the loop are mainly within what was once called the Shitamachi, or "low city", encompassing northeasterly Asakusa and Ryôgoku across the Sumida River.
