'' Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world occupying nearly one-half of the South American continent. Very little is known of the indigenous population of Brazil which existed prior to the arrival of the Portuguese navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500. Sugar growing in Brazil became a profitable enterprise for the early Portuguese colonists who supplied labor by enslaving the Indian population. In 1807 the Portuguese Prince Regent sailed to Brazil to flee Napoleon’s army which was marching on Lisbon. He established Rio de Janeiro as the Capitol of the Portuguese government in exile. In 1822 Portugal acceded to Brazil’s desire for independence, largely because the Prince Regent’s son had become a vocal advocate for Brazilian independence. Following the abolition of slavery in 1888, thousands of European immigrants poured into Brazil to work on the coffee plantations, coffee having replaced sugar as the country’s major income source. Since then Brazil has undergone countless military coups, totalitarian regimes and since 1989 some shaky, but democratically elected, governments. Brazil is a country of dance and song - the samba, bossa nova and lambada complement the music and lyrics of many of the great Brazilian composers and performers. Carnival, in late February, is the worlds largest party and a truly remarkable experience for first time participants. Single male visitors are sometimes attracted to Rio de Janeiro by the fact that the Ipanema beach is usually frequented by some of the world’s most beautiful women whose features and coloring reflect the combined blood lines of European and native ancestry.
