'' Portugal’s recorded history dates back to the arrival of the Celts around 700 B.C. Thereafter conquests by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Moors each impacted the evolving Portuguese culture. Its place in history commenced in the 15th century when Portuguese sailors began the creation of an enormous overseas empire that extended to the Americas, the far east, Brazil and Africa. The skill of Portuguese seafarers matched that of its much larger rivals in Spain, France, Holland and England. Today, nearly every commercial fishing fleet in the world contains its cadre of Portuguese fishermen. About the size of Maine, Portugal offers an attractive climate, lovely beaches and quaint hotels together with a traditional bill of fare which contains wonderful varieties of fresh vegetables to accompany some exquisitely prepared seafood main courses. A favorite, "Linguado Cristiana", found only in a few restaurants in southern Portugal is most certainly the creme de la creme of seafood. The country also produces some excellent wine and port and remains one of the most economical places in Europe to travel at the start of this millennium.
