Training Course:

Wage Earning Home Economics Education (Certificate)

School/Trainer:

Ferris State University
Big Rapids, Michigan, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' This is a specialized vocational education program that prepares others for the important responsibilities of a wage earning home economics related career. Service areas include child and adult care and guidance, food management, family and consumer sciences, and life management.

The wage earning home economics program prepares students to teach in high schools, vocational and occupational programs, area skill centers and community colleges.

Two years of occupational work experience within the last six years is required for the B.S. degree. Students with at least one year, but less than two, are required to complete a one semester work internship. A teaching minor is required with some specialties.

Professional Opportunities
Graduates earn bachelor of science degrees and may qualify for a Michigan Secondary Provisional Certificate with a vocational endorsement. Candidates are required to pass state-mandated Subject Matter Exams in their selected teaching major and minor areas prior to a certification recommendation.

Because the service area of vocational education is expanding, there is a shortage of qualified teachers in this field. Graduates of this program are fully qualified for challenging and satisfying employment in education or industry.

With a strong background in both a specialty area of the program and teaching, the Ferris State graduate can expect a high degree of success in the job market.

Admission Requirements
Transfer students with 30 credit hours or more must possess a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students transferring into the program with completed majors or minors must have the appropriate GPA as established by each department. Consult individual program description for other admission requirements.

Students must have:

1. An A.A.S. Degree with at least 40 semester hours in the occupational major and a minimum grade point average of 2.50 in the major courses.
OR

2. Occupational competence documented by the Michigan Occupational Competency Assessment Center (MOCAC).

Teacher Certification Requirements
As required by the State of Michigan to receive teacher certification, all teacher candidates must: (1) pass the Michigan Basic Skills Test, (2) pass the pedagogy tests in their subject area majors and minors, and (3) have a 2.50 minimum GPA to receive teacher certification in Michigan. These state requirements are in addition to the FSU graduation requirements of your individual program.

Graduation Requirements
The wage earning home economics education program leads to a bachelor of science degree through the School of Education, College of Education & Human Services. Graduates must complete all of FSU’s general education, wage earning home economics, and education requirements. Professional education requirements include a semester of directed student teaching. Consult individual program description for other graduation requirements. ...''
