Prerequisites This course is designed for experienced project managers who meet the experience criteria for taking the PMP® exam and intend to take this within the next three months. It assumes some previous experience with basic project management techniques. The course provides 35 hours of instructor led training and fulfils the PMI® requirement in this regard.
Course outline NB. The course times are indicative only and may need to be adapted to meet delegates learning needs and include fruitful discussions.
Day 1 09:00 Introduction to course This session provides a brief introduction to the course The attendees and the facilitator introduce themselves The Course Objectives are explained. These are:
Provide familiarisation with the PMI Processes and Knowledge Areas. Familiarise attendees with project management best practice. Provide awareness of and practice in key project management techniques

Learning Objective: Establish the need for processes that emphasise the use of customer focused success criteria and recognising organisational constraints

What is meant by success Barriers to delivering success
The team discussions are then summarised in plenary session and the requirements for a successful approach to project management are identified. Following feedback on what is meant by success there will be a discussion on establishing and measuring success criteria. The facilitator will use the feedback on barriers to success to identify the characteristics of a successful framework. This will set the scene for an overview of the PMI approach.

11:15 The PMI Framework Learning Objective: Familiarise candidates with the PMI approach.
Content: An introduction to PMI principles, the nine knowledge areas and the five process groups. Professional behaviours.

13:15 The Role of the Project Manager Learning Objective: To demonstrate the key elements of the Project Manager’s role as seen by the PMI
Content: The session uses an exercise followed by a review to bring out the key messages.

14:30 Stakeholder Analysis Learning Objective: To emphasise the importance of stakeholder management and provide techniques.
Content: Definition of a stakeholder and discussion on typical stakeholders. Stakeholder mapping, stakeholder plotting and partnership maps.
15:15 Initiating the Project Learning Objective: Familiarise candidates with the PMI approach to initiating a project.
Content: Overview of the Process Group. Contents of the Project Charter and the Preliminary Scope Statement. A plenary discussion on why organisations commission projects followed by a short session on Cost Benefit Analysis as a project selection tool. The session looks at categories of cost, tangible and intangible benefits and appraisal methods.
16:00 Exercise �Cost Benefit Analysis Learning Objective: Provide an understanding of and practice in Cost Benefit Analysis
Content: Working in teams the attendees use information about a case study project to carry out a Cost Benefit Analysis.

09:00 Planning (1) �Overview Learning Objective: To provide an outline of the processes involved in this process group.
Content: An overview of the Planning Process Group. The contents of a Project Management Plan.
09:15 Planning (2) �Work Breakdown Structures Learning Objective: To explain the PMI approach and terminology.
Content: The principle of work breakdown and an explanation of the terms used. The session includes an exercise to provide practice in the technique and an understanding of the PMI approach. A sample solution is provided.

10:45 Planning (3) �Estimating Learning Objective: To explain the PMI approaches and the key techniques.
Content: A consideration of various estimating techniques including an explanation of terms such as parametric, analogous, quantitative, PERT and Delphi estimates. The importance of historical data and its use in Standard Task estimating. The session includes an exercise to provide practice in the technique.
11:30 Exercise �Estimating Learning Objective: To increase understanding of the PMI approach to estimating time and cost for project work
Content: Assuming that each of the work packages identified in the previous exercise converts to a single activity the teams are asked to estimate the effort required for each. Based on the resource constraints provided they then have to assign resources and convert the effort figures to durations.

Content: An explanation of Critical Path Analysis including an individual exercise.

14:45 Exercise �Critical Path Analysis Learning Objective: To reinforce the technique
Content: The teams create and analyse the network for the case study.
15:30 Planning (5) �Organisation & Communications Learning Objective: To explain the PMI approach and the key techniques.
Content: A discussion on various organisational structures and the characteristics associated with them. Comparison with structures experienced by the attendees. Planning project communications. This session includes an exercise.
16:30 Test One Learning Objective: To familiarise attendees with the PMI question format and to enable them to benchmark their current knowledge level.
Content: A multi-choice 20 question test in the PMI format followed by a review of the answers.

09:00 Planning (6) �Risk Management Learning Objective: To familiarise the attendees with this key area of project management.
Content: The processes involved. The nature of risk and key misconceptions. A rigorous approach to identifying risk. Risk qualification analysis. Responding to risk. The session includes an exercise based on the case study.
10:00 Planning (7) �Scheduling Learning Objective: To bring out key messages regarding use of resource, resource smoothing and critical chain
Content: Resource smoothing. Techniques for schedule compression. The Critical Chain approach.

10:45 Exercise �Scheduling Learning Objective: To reinforce the messages from the previous session
Content: The teams create schedules for the case study project, factor in project management costs and identify the critical chain.
11:45 Planning (8) �Procurement Planning Learning Objective: To familiarise the attendees with the activities involved in the planning of procurement.
Content: Choosing what to procure and the appropriate types of contract to be used.
12:15 Planning (9) �Quality Planning Learning Objective: To provide an understanding of the PMI approach to quality
Content: The difference between Quality Assurance and Quality Control. The Quality Assurance review. Quality control methods. The use of control charts and Pareto analysis.

14:00 Exercise �Developing the Team Learning Objective: To enable a discussion of the human elements of project management.
