This program will grant graduates a Vancouver Island University Road Building &, Heavy Construction Equipment Operator certificate with a Backhoe, Dozer, Excavator, Front End Loader, Articulated Rock Truck, Grader, or Articulated Rock Truck/Front End Loader specialty, as well as ITA Heavy Equipment Operator Foundation and Technician certification. The program is delivered by instructors in classrooms at our Heavy Equipment Operator site, as well as on-site training in the operation of heavy equipment. Instruction will be classroom, lab and shop with experiential components and may use online components. This program provides students with the knowledge and basic skills that will help them to apprenticeship or help them to be successful as they continue directly into industry.

Tractor Loader Backhoe Operator

The Heavy Equipment Operator �Tractor Loader Backhoe Apprenticeship is based on competencies through demonstrated skill, rather than a fixed number of hours on the job, however, the benchmark is 2,260 hours, which includes 240 hours of in-class training. The apprenticeship is completed when the apprentice has achieved competency in all of the on-the-job performance objectives and when the 240 hours (or approximately 8 weeks) of in-school training have successfully been completed.

Students will become familiarized with the main components of the back-hoe, specific uses of the machine, commonly used accessories, and the controls and their uses. Through hands on exercises the students will learn about specific operating safety procedures, the walk around check, start up and shut down procedures, and routine maintenance procedures. Through extensive seat-time on the machine students will perform basic work tasks and procedures with on going skill testing and operating tips. A proficiency list indicating skill level achievement will be developed for each student.
