Autobody MIG Welding

Learn the basic principles and practices of MIG welding! Did you know that today&,#146,s vehicles are manufactured using high strength low alloys, ranging from 16-gauge to 26-gauge. In order to preserve the characteristics of these types of metals, welding must be done with a metal inert gas welder. Students will study the principles of metal inert gas welding on vehicle sheet metal to replace panels damaged by collision or corrosion.

Students will receive five hours of theory instruction and 19 hours of actual shop practice. Students will do a shop project where they replace a damaged area of a sheet metal panel. The course also devotes time to welder setup and diagnostics, and common weld problems.

Mig Welding /Tig Welding

This 10-week course is designed to instruct the welder in basic GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG) welding use and learn the practical and theory fundamentals and procedures. Topics include: joint preparation, technique on pipe and different thickness gauge metal and plate, type and sizes of filler metal, shielding gases, etc.
Develop the ability to determine the type of power source required, select the type of current and polarity best suited, select the type of gas and gas flow rates, distinguish torches and wire required, determine the correct metal edge preparation, weld basic joints in the flat position on mild steel. TIG welding will also include aluminum and stainless steel. Demonstration on Flux Core welding.

Basic MIG Welding

This course will introduce the different aspects and use of MIG equipment as well as safe work practices. Topics covered will include: general welding of carbon steel, set up and operation of MIG equipment, basic joint preparation and clean-up of completed welds. This course will also focus on the basic day to day troubleshooting problems and solutions including MIG torches (contact tips,diffusers, nozzles and liners), drive rolls as well as demonstrating the various modes of metal transfer. Students will learn to adjust the machine power source and wire feeder control settings and weld in a variety of positions. CSA approved steel-toed footwear, gloves and safety glasses are required on the first evening (not supplied).
