Through this innovative four-session course, you’ll learn to undertake environmental energy assessment of new and existing buildings covering: �building science �blower door testing (theory and practical) �sealing building envelope (theory and practical) Air Infiltration testing incorporates the use of a fan pressurisation kit, including a calibrated fan for measuring an airflow rate, and a pressure-sensing device to measure the air pressure created by the fan flow. The combinations of pressure and fan-flow measurements are used to determine the building air-tightness. The air-tightness of a building is useful knowledge when trying to increase energy conservation or decrease indoor air pollution, or control building pressures. This course will provide a background in sustainability and practical advice on the types of retrofitting that can be undertaken in residential properties with the primary intention of assisting households in reducing their daily impact on the environment.

Retrofitting tasks in this context will include:
replacing light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs
sealing of draught and leakage points
installation of windows coverings and treatments
basic plumbing tasks
installation of ceiling insulation.

Retrofitters who complete this course will not be engaged in building and construction work, and will not undertake tasks normally completed by a qualified tradesperson. Possible employment options include local councils, private companies, utility and maintenance companies.

Volunteers who successfully complete the course will be able to plan a home visit, conduct a preliminary assessment of basic home energy use, water use and waste disposal practices and be able to advise householders of recommendations for savings on the basis of this assessment.

Volunteers will be able to record the information and complete a report on the home visit under the direction of a host organisation. An example of a host organisation might be a local council or a community organisation.
