Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians overhaul, repair and service equipment such as graders, loaders, shovels, tractors, trucks, forklifts, drills, and wheeled and tracked vehicles. Working from manufacturer specifications, they identify and repair problems in structural, mechani­cal, or hydraulic systems.

Commercial Transport Technicians diagnose, repair and service highway buses and trucks. They work on the mechanical, electrical and electronic components of vehicles, including the fuel, brake, steering and suspension, transmission, emission control and exhaust, and cooling and climate control systems. Some mechanics specialize in one or more of these systems.

Heavy Duty Equipment Technician is a nationally designated trade under the Inter-Provincial Red Seal Program. Commercial Transport Technician is designated as a Truck and Transport Mechanic under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program.

This program will grant graduates a Vancouver Island University Road Building &, Heavy Construction Equipment Operator certificate with a Backhoe, Dozer, Excavator, Front End Loader, Articulated Rock Truck, Grader, or Articulated Rock Truck/Front End Loader specialty, as well as ITA Heavy Equipment Operator Foundation and Technician certification. The program is delivered by instructors in classrooms at our Heavy Equipment Operator site, as well as on-site training in the operation of heavy equipment. Instruction will be classroom, lab and shop with experiential components and may use online components. This program provides students with the knowledge and basic skills that will help them to apprenticeship or help them to be successful as they continue directly into industry.

Grader Operation

Students will become familiarized with the main components of the grader, specific uses of the machine, commonly used accessories, and the controls and their uses. Through hands on exercises the students will learn about specific operating safety procedures, the walk around check, start up and shut down procedures, and routine maintenance procedures. Through extensive seat-time on the machine students will perform basic work tasks and procedures with on going skill testing and operating tips. A proficiency list indicating skill level achievement will be developed for each student.
