AFTRS production, research and collaborative activities contribute directly to the nation’s creative economy. The school is focused on continuing to nurture and launch the careers of the next generation of Australian screen story tellers and audio visual practitioners.


Created in 1973 by the Australian Government as a key strategy in the revival of the Australian film industry, AFTRS is the only institution of its kind in the country - with its own professional-standard radio, film and television studios and post-production facilities.

AFTRS has produced some of the biggest names in the industry and has built an international reputation for excellence.

Before the foundations of the school were laid, Philip Adams, Barry Jones and Peter Coleman travelled the world gathering information about other film training institutions to serve as a model. Philip Adams said at the time the need for an Australian film school was great - because the only alternative to formal training was to train people in the deep end of the industry - but there wasn’t an industry.

AFTRS was formed to be the driving force of the new industry. And what a force it’s been with BAFTAs, Palm D’Ors, Oscars, AFIs and IF awards stacked up as a testament to the AFTRS effect.
