About this school:

Lehigh University

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States

'' Lehigh University provides an education that lasts a lifetime. We blend the theoretical with the practical, and are proud of our ability to cross academic disciplines to provide an integrated learning experience. Our goal is to prepare students for not just their first job, but for their last one, as well.

Asa Packer founded Lehigh in 1865. As an industrial pioneer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Packer recognized the need for workers who were broadly educated in the liberal arts and sciences—young people who could combine practical skills with theory, judgment, reasoning and self-discipline. Even though time sometimes has a way of cementing or melting away intent, Asa Packer’s vision of 1865 remains clear and true today as a guide for Lehigh’s future.

The university is constantly infused with new faculty and students determined to renew and rework the original principles in the light of changing times. The studentsambition and zeal bear fruit when they graduate. Lehigh alumni have served the nation as business and political leaders, as teachers and journalists, and in the professions of engineering, medicine and law. Most give generously to their alma mater Lehigh typically ranks seventh, according to U.S. News and World Report, among major American universities in the percentage of alumni making donations.

Today, Lehigh physically is much different from the institution Asa Packer founded. Gleaming new buildings from laboratories to concert halls to libraries attest to the university’s strength not just in engineering and technical fields, but also in business, education, the fine arts and the humanities and sciences.

But the university still adheres to Asa Packer’s goal of a liberal and scientific education for practical service. With generous support from individuals, foundations, industry, and government, professors and students work to maintain high quality in instructional programs, and to ensure that future generations of students will continue to find Lehigh small enough to be personal but large enough to be powerful.
